New York – The ľֱ’s Aid Society is pleased to announce that its President and CEO, Richard R. Buery Jr., will be presented with an Emerging Leader Award tonight by the in Washington, D.C. Buery will be honored with other community leaders for significant contributions to African American and other underserved communities during the annual Black Party, part of the CBCF’s 42nd (ALC).
The CBCF, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy, research and educational institute, hosts the nation’s premier conference on legislative and policy issues impacting the African American community, with thousands of attendees from across the country and around the world. The theme of this year’s ALC is “Inspiring Leaders and Building Generations,” echoing CBCF’s focus on leadership, education and public policy. In previous years, recipients of ALC’s Emerging Leader Award have included distinguished individuals from the business, academic and government sectors.
Appointed in October 2009, Mr. Buery is the tenth President and Chief Executive Officer of The ľֱ’s Aid Society, which provides comprehensive supports to over 70,000 children and their families annually in targeted high-needs New York City neighborhoods. Buery is the first black leader of ľֱ’s Aid and the youngest since Charles Loring Brace founded the organization in 1853.
Before assuming leadership of ľֱ’s Aid, Mr. Buery co-founded Groundwork Inc., The Mission Hill Summer Program and iMentor – all nonprofits dedicated to improving outcomes for underprivileged youth. The recipient of many honors and awards, Mr. Buery was a 1992-1993 Michael Clark Rockefeller Fellow, in 2000 was named one of Ebony magazine’s “Thirty Leaders of the Future under Thirty,” and in 2009 was named one of Crain’s New York Business’s “40 Leaders of the Future under 40” in recognition of his contributions to the life of New York City. Mr. Buery is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School.
